KPMG sponsors INROADS
KPMG is a national corporate sponsor of INROADS, a program that places minority students in intern positions in our offices throughout the country. Through this program, we offer internships at an early stage, i.e., prior to entering college and for as long as five years, compared with the traditional one-year internship taking place the summer before graduation.
INROADS Overview and History
In 1970, INROADS was founded in Chicago by Frank C. Carr, a former publishing director. Since that time, INROADS has grown from 25 interns and 17 sponsoring companies to a national organization providing academic support and career training and guidance to more than 5,500 interns sponsored by more than 600 companies and professional firms. Corporate executives serve as advisors and mentors; INROADS staff, alumni, and corporate representatives provide year-round training and counseling. Today, more than 19,000 INROADS graduates are pursuing professional and technical careers in business and industry.
INROADS is an organization that develops and places talented minority youth in business and industry and prepares them for corporate and community leadership. INROADS seeks to increase business career opportunities and knowledge for minorities while giving corporations the opportunity to develop future diverse managerial talent. In response to the growing demand from business for qualified minorities, INROADS was established to identify interested, capable minority high school and college students who would enter college to pursue business, engineering, and technical careers.
For college students, the INROADS process involves recruitment, two to five consecutive summer work experiences with a local corporation, year-round academic coaching and advising, and training activities. For high school students, it involves intensive academic instruction, personal development seminars, and career exposure experiences. The goal of the INROADS process is to place that intern with his/ her sponsoring company full-time upon graduation.
INROADS requires a long-term commitment from both interns and sponsoring corporations. The interns are challenged to excel in all areas including job assignments and academics. In addition, INROADS interns are required to:
- Attend a four-year college or university or pursue an undergraduate or graduate program
- Meet the INROADS academic standards
- Attend INROADS sponsored training activities
- Set goals for career and personal development
- Contribute to the community by actively participating in community service projects.
