What made you want to go on assignment?
I think a short-term assignment can give you an introduction to an international experience. It is a great way to go in and learn about a new culture and a new office, and really get a feel for what it’s like to work for a global organization like KPMG.
What was your role during your assignments?
Both my assignments took me to the Dutch IES Tax practice. I think they were a great introduction to living and working abroad. I learned more about US tax and a little bit about Dutch taxation as well, all of which was really interesting.
Do you think your assignment experiences have helped your career at KPMG?
I think that both of my assignments helped my career, both as a former member of the Tax practice, and now as the Senior Manager in charge of global mobility in Canada. As a member of the Tax practice, I think that it helped us bring back efficiencies that we used back in Toronto, and also gave me more exposure to different areas of US tax law. As a former Assignee, I know what I was feeling when I went on those assignments, and so I can empathize with current assignees and try to make their transition to host firms as smooth as possible.
Do you think KPMG has benefited from your assignment?
First of all, from a tax perspective, I brought back information and knowledge that I did not previously have. This meant that I could work more efficiently on my files in the Tax practice. Furthermore, the global mobility program has benefited from me going on international assignment because I'm now more aware of what Assignees go through. I understand what they're experiencing, during the application process and when they’re abroad.
What do you think is the most important thing that has changed about you, as a result of global mobility?
I think the main thing I have taken away from my global assignment is being more open to new cultures and new ways of doing business. These are things that I might not have encountered had I remained in my home country.
What is the one key piece of advice you would give someone considering an assignment?
I think that anyone looking to go on an international assignment has to be aware of the time involved in applying for an international assignment. It can be time-consuming and it is not always easy. It’s a great opportunity, but from start to finish it can take a while to get everything in place.
In your own words, describe how it feels to be an Assignee
It's a fun, rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience – and it can be hard work.
