Family for Literacy
KPMG is passionate about corporate citizenship, and dedicated to supporting the communities in which we live and work. The firm established KPMG's Family for Literacy in 2007 to support and expand upon its philanthropic focus on youth and education. The program provides children from low-income families with their own new books and in many cases, their very first book.
The program's objectives are to:
- Promote and improve literacy in our local communities.
- Reaffirm the firm's commitment to and impact on youth and education.
- Provide an opportunity for KPMG's partners and employees; alumni, retirees, and interns; and their families to contribute.
- Strengthen our relationships with each other by enabling us to work together toward a common goal.

Since its inception, KPMG's Family for Literacy has distributed more than 1 million new books to low-income children in nearly 80 communities across the United States. What distinguishes it from most other corporate philanthropic efforts is that it was developed not only for our partners and employees, but also for their spouses, significant others, children, and other relatives, as well as KPMG interns, alumni, and retirees across the country.
The result? An extended family of volunteers working together to impact children's education from the very start, laying the foundation for their future success, while helping eradicate illiteracy in the United States.
Interns Join the Cause
In 2008, the firm's 1,500 summer interns from across the country established their own extension of KPMG's Family for Literacy called Interns for Literacy. Since then, they've been joined by subsequent winter and summer classes of interns in developing fundraising events and visiting schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, and literacy programs. Their impact has been significant: In the last year alone, KPMG's Interns for Literacy gave 4,800 volunteer hours, and funded, donated, and distributed more than 43,000 books in 70 communities.
Get Involved on Your Campus!
First Book Advisory Boards are committees of volunteers, representing a community or campus, that come together to raise awareness and funds in order to provide new books to local literacy programs serving children from low-income families. Awards
The passion of our volunteers and the extent of their reach in helping low-income kids to broaden their horizons through reading have been acknowledged publicly: In the program's first year, the Points of Light Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting volunteerism as a solution to serious problems, honored KPMG with a Connect America Partner of the Year Award for the Family for Literacy program. Additionally, Family for Literacy was a key reason that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently recognized KPMG with its prestigious Corporate Stewardship Award.
Moving forward, our goal is to build upon the strong foundation the program has in place and expand our efforts even further.
