What can I do now to lay the foundation for success with attaining global opportunities?

There are many things that students can do now to strengthen their global brand, and even concentrating on just one or two things can be a great help toward attaining your global professional goals. Here are several examples of things that can be done:

  • Study abroad. Studying in a different country can be one of the most rewarding and educational experiences a student can have. You will learn many things about yourself, and the experience will signal to global employers that you could be a valuable asset. The following are some things that can enhance your study abroad experience:
    • Make friends with exchange students from all over the world. You will receive uncensored versions of numerous cultures and build a global network that can be extremely valuable for your future.
    • Take classes that matter. Many students do not challenge themselves enough while abroad and end up losing an important aspect of their study abroad program. Taking challenging classes abroad can give you a new perspective on coursework at home universities.
    • Join study groups with students from the school you are visiting. They will be able to provide you with an inside look at what is really expected of you as a student and can teach you about their culture in the process.
  • Utilize resources available at school.
    • Take classes that provide useful insight into other cultures. If studying abroad is not an option, international business or culture classes can be the next best thing. Additionally, taking classes to learn a new language or to receive a deeper understanding of a language can also be greatly beneficial.
    • Form student groups with classmates from around the world. Overcoming language and/or cultural barriers for the completion of various projects can be very rewarding, and your global network will expand.
  • Don't sweat it if studying abroad or taking additional classes simply isn't an option. There are still many other things you can do to strengthen your global brand!
    • Surf the Internet to learn about different cultures. Credible Internet sources can be a great way to learn about different cultures around the world. You can even use the Internet to sign up for a pen pal or use social networking Web sites to find students with similar professional aspirations.
    • Pay attention to the news! Knowing what's going on around the world is often overlooked, but can be very useful for understanding different cultures.
    • Browse through the global opportunities section of KPMG's campus Web site and see what is available to both interns and full-time employees. There are many options to choose from!
